I started up a weekly open-mic night in Toronto, and my homegirl Lizz Mendez-Berry wrote up this nice piece in Eye weekly. Lizz moved to New York to work for Vibe soon after. I’m not sure what’s she’s up to these days.

My friend Tom Quinlan, who’s a regular contributor at Exclaim and Peace magazines, wrote a large piece on the hip-hop scene in Canada for this Japanese mag. Pretty cool.

Divine Styler : The Power of the Word (Exclaim Magazine, Apr 00) | cover | 1 | 2
Exclaim does a regular feature where they do a career timeline for a specific artist. My buddy Tom Quinlan wrote this one, and I helped him out with the research for it. Of course, there’s a mention of Divine Styler Magazine in there.

Zines (RapPages Magazine, Sep 99) | cover | 1
RapPages used to feature underground magazines, and here they did a little write-up on my ‘zine, which was nice of them. After this, I got offered a regular column at RapPages, but the publisher Larry Flynt pulled the plug on the mag before my first one was published.

A cool little piece on Divine Styler, they mentioned my mag, and used the title of my magazine for the title of their piece: “In Search of Divine Styler.”

Independents Day (Hip-Hop Connection, UK, Nov 98) | cover | 1
Another bit of love from DJ Greenpeace at HHC. I wrote “The G-Files” and “Maple Syrup” for this mini Can-con feature, and supplied him with the photos of Supreme Being Unit, Buck 65, Sebutones, and of course the cover of DSM number 7.

Urb’s annual “Next 100” issue, with a Divine Styler feature, and a mention of my magazine. I remember when this came out, Suroosh from Vice called me and was like “dude, have you seen the new issue of Urb? Divine Styler basically credits you with making him want to come back out!” I have to admit, I was pretty excited when I saw this.

This is a little feature in Mirror weekly, for the Cock Dynamiks tour which I organized and promoted. Not a lot of people came out, but it was a good time. Look in the “random” section of the site, I think I have the flyer for this show in there.

Canada News (RER [Rap & Ragga] Magazine, France, Oct 97) | cover | 1
RER is a magazine from France, I helped them out with some info on some Canadian hip-hop, and they put the cover of my ‘zine in there.

Literary Review (VICE Magazine, Spring 97) | 1
This was nice to get a little from Vice, this was just a few months after I started writing the rap column for them. He mentions DJ Shadow giving my mag props, which was pretty cool. I have a fax that DJ Shadow sent me in the stuff section.

B-Boy Kingdom (RapPages Magazine, Nov 96) | cover | 1
Back then, RapPages mag was basically the West Coast competition for the Source. They had two great columns I used to read religiously each month. One was Bobbito’s “Barbershop” and the other was J-Smoov’s “B-Boy Kingdom.” This little mention of me and my ‘zine was the first time I think I’d gotten anything mentioned in a major magazine, and I was super stoked when this came out.
